The Accident Claims industry makes 60billion every year and there is a good reason for this. So many different types of accidents lead to money being paid out, accidents on the road to accidents at work, from accidents on the pavement to accidents in the home. It can’t be an accident where you were at fault, it has to be the fault of someone else. Accident claims companies are all over the TV and Radio so the industry is well known throughout the country.

Even where there’s nobody else to blame, the British tend to be a fairly accident prone bunch. And it seems we can injure ourselves on just about anything. Take the year 2000 as an example. In that year alone, 89 people in the UK had an accident in their home relating to a pet fish, 1,419 had accidents at home involving a broom and a further 3903 injured themselves with a hammer. And as if armed and dangerous pet fish and DIY gone wrong wasn’t enough, we’re not even safe in our gardens! 5269 had an accident at home (outdoors) that related in some way to a hedge!

Wouldn’t you be embarrassed if you caused yourself an injury involving your pet fish? Well 89 people in the year 2000 were very embarrassed as this statistic was kept very quiet at the time. It is hard to imagine the turn of events that would have led to somebody getting injured due to their fish, but I bet it is funny for any onlookers.

There are 3million accidents in the home annually, which is a lot of preventable accidents! The sole job of the ‘Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents’ is as the name says, to try to make sure that people are more vigilant to stop accidents occurring. Of course they can’t stop people from having accidents involving their pet fish as that is completely in the realms of personal stupidity!

RoSPA is facing an uphill struggle to cut accidents down, and of course will never eradicate them totally due to the accident prone nature of humans! It is down to us to be more vigilant and careful in the home to ensure that we do not have any silly accidents.
