There are several types of insurance that come under the heading of car insurance. The major types are liability insurance, comprehensive insurance, collision insurance, and uninsured and under-insured motorist insurance. Not all jurisdictions have all of these insurance types, but most have at least one, which may be required for drivers and vehicle owners.

Most parts of the world require motorists and vehicle owners to carry a minimum level of liability insurance. Liability coverage is intended to protect you from costs if you cause an accident. There are two parts to liability coverage: bodily injury liability and property damage liability. Property damage liability pays to fix the other driver’s vehicle when you were at fault in an accident. Your policy will have limits to the amount it will pay to fix or replace another car.

Medical expenses for the victims of an accident caused by you is covered under bodily injury liability insurance. Liability comes in two parts. There is a maximum amount paid for a single victim of an accident and the total amount that can be paid to all victims of the accident.

If you are involved in an accident where the other driver has little or no insurance, you are covered in some jurisdiction. Some places have a high number of drivers to do not buy insurance. If the other vehicle is at fault and has no insurance, you are still covered.

Personal injury protection covers your and your passengers medical expenses. This will also cover your time lost at work or time with rehabilitation if needed. If you have medical insurance with a high deductible or no insurance, you will want to make sure that the amount of coverage you carry will take care of you and your family if needed.

Comprehensive insurance protects your car if it is stolen, has hail damage or is damaged in some way other than in an accident. This is peace of mind coverage. It is not required insurance in most jurisdictions.

Car insurance policies provide you with a package of selections offering protection against various types of accidents.
